Sedgefield Racecourse

Sedgefield Racecourse sits near the market town of Sedgefield in County Durham, a dedicated National Hunt venue racing exclusively over hurdles and fences on turf. The course stages around 17 fixtures between September and May, making it one of the busier jumps tracks in the North East. It sits close to the A1(M) and draws regular fields from yards across Teesside, Tyneside, and North Yorkshire.

Racing has taken place at Sedgefield since at least 1732, with officially recognised meetings from 1846. The course survived three separate threats of closure during the twentieth century before Frank Scotto became chairman in 1977 and drove improvements that secured its future. Northern Racing — now Arena Racing Company — purchased the course in 2001 and invested approximately £600,000 in facilities and drainage. The track is a left-handed oval of approximately one mile and two furlongs with an undulating profile throughout. The highest point is at the home turn, giving way to a steep descent into the home straight. The final 150 yards climb uphill to the winning post — a feature that catches out tired horses in the closing stages, particularly over longer trips on testing ground. The run-in from the last fence is around 200 yards. Chase circuits take in eight fences, generally considered forgiving, while hurdle circuits include five flights. The bends are tight and the overall layout is sharp, creating a test that does not replicate conditions at nearby galloping tracks.

One quirk of Sedgefield’s history: the last fence was once an open ditch, and the run-in from it stretched 525 yards — longer than the Grand National’s. In 1994 a water jump was replaced by a plain fence, known as the Johnny Ridley fence, and the run-in was shortened to its current length.

Key Races at Sedgefield

The Durham National is the course’s flagship race — a Class 2 handicap chase over approximately three miles and five furlongs, run in October with a prize fund of £27,500. It is the highlight of the Sedgefield calendar and regularly attracts competitive fields from leading northern yards. The 2021 renewal produced a notable winner in Hewick, who went on to win the Galway Plate, the American Grand National, and the King George VI Chase — a reminder that quality horses pass through the smaller tracks on their way up.

The majority of Sedgefield’s programme consists of Class 4 and Class 5 hurdles and chases, alongside maiden hurdles and NH flat races. The course is a common starting point for novice hurdlers and chasers from northern yards — trainers value the forgiving fences and manageable fields as a place to give young horses experience before stepping them up in class elsewhere. Field sizes are often moderate, and the lower classification of most races means ability gaps within fields can be wide. With 17 meetings spread across nine months, form at the course accumulates through the season. The fixture list includes themed race days. What to Look for When Betting at Sedgefield

The tight, left-handed circuit is the defining feature. Sedgefield’s bends are sharper than most National Hunt courses, and horses that race handily or close to the pace tend to have an advantage over those that need time and space to build a challenge. Big-striding gallopers who thrive at galloping tracks like Wetherby or Newcastle can struggle here, while nimble, quick-travelling types that handle tight turns and changes of gradient come into their own.

Going conditions vary across the season. The turf at Sedgefield is well regarded, and summer and early-autumn fixtures often produce good or good-to-soft ground with competitive racing. Winter cards are a different proposition — the ground can ride genuinely testing, and on heavy going the uphill finish becomes a serious stamina test, particularly over three miles or further. The easy fences mean clean jumping is less of a differentiator at Sedgefield than at stiffer tracks. Horses with modest jumping technique but plenty of pace and stamina can get away with more here than they would at Cheltenham or Carlisle. That said, the downhill approach to the home straight demands balance, and a horse that pecks or scrambles at the last fence loses momentum right before the uphill climb to the line.
