About Haydock Park Racecourse
Haydock Park sits at Newton-le-Willows in Merseyside, roughly equidistant between Liverpool and Manchester. Owned by The Jockey Club, the course has been staging racing since 1899, though racing at Newton-le-Willows is recorded as far back as 1752. The Old Newton Cup, first run in 1807, is the last surviving link between today's racecourse and those earlier meetings.
Haydock is a dual-purpose track with a busy fixture list spanning flat and National Hunt racing throughout the year. The flat course is a left-handed oval of approximately one mile and five furlongs, with a home straight that rises gently over about four and a half furlongs. A separate straight course on the inner accommodates races over five and six furlongs. The National Hunt chase course follows the same left-handed oval with ten stiff drop fences and a 440-yard run-in, while the hurdles track runs inside the chase course with five flights per circuit.
The course is widely regarded as a fair, galloping track. Extensive drainage and re-cambering work on the east bend has improved the surface's resilience, though the northwest climate means testing ground is a regular feature through the winter. Key Races at Haydock
Haydock's flagship flat event is the Sprint Cup, a Group 1 contest over six furlongs held in September. Run on the straight course, it regularly draws leading sprinters from across Europe and sits alongside the Old Borough Cup on one of the strongest Saturday cards of the autumn flat season.
In May, the Temple Stakes (Group 2, five furlongs) and the Sandy Lane Stakes (Group 2, six furlongs for three-year-olds) share a high-quality card with the Silver Bowl handicap. The Sandy Lane in particular has a strong record for producing sprinters who go on to compete at the highest level. The Lancashire Oaks (Group 2) for fillies and mares follows in July, while the John of Gaunt Stakes (Group 3, seven furlongs) and the Old Newton Cup — a heritage handicap over a mile and a half — provide further quality across the flat programme.
The centrepiece of Haydock's National Hunt calendar is the course's sole Grade 1 chase, a three-mile contest staged in November. It forms the opening leg of the Chasing Triple Crown and has attracted some of the finest staying chasers in the sport's history. The Peter Marsh Chase (Grade 2) in January and the Tommy Whittle Chase (Grade 2) in December serve as important midwinter trials, while the Grand National Trial in February has long been a pointer towards the race at nearby Aintree. The Swinton Handicap Hurdle, run in May alongside the flat programme, adds a National Hunt dimension to the late spring fixture list.
