Cheltenham Racecourse
Cheltenham Racecourse sits at Prestbury Park in Gloucestershire, in a natural amphitheatre below the Cotswold escarpment at Cleeve Hill. The bowl shape means spectators can see the action across almost the entire circuit — one reason the atmosphere here is unmatched in jump racing. Cheltenham is exclusively a National Hunt venue, hosting hurdle and steeplechase racing on turf with no flat or all-weather surface. With a capacity of 67,500, it is the largest jumps racecourse in Britain.
Racing took place nearby as early as 1815, with flat racing on Cleeve Hill giving way to steeplechasing by the 1830s. The present course at Prestbury Park dates from 1902. The Gold Cup was first run in 1924 and the Champion Hurdle in 1927, establishing Cheltenham as the championship ground for British and Irish jump racing. It has held that status ever since.
The course is left-handed with two separate tracks running side by side: the Old Course and the New Course. Both run over undulating turf and share the famous uphill finish that climbs roughly 10 metres over the final three furlongs. The gradient is modest on paper, but the difficulty is in the transition: horses run downhill towards the second-last fence before facing the climb to the line, a shift that catches tired legs out. The Old Course has a run-in of approximately 350 yards and hosts the Showcase, the November Meeting, and the first two days of the Festival. The New Course run-in is shorter at around 220 yards, with a tricky downhill fence and a peculiarity over two-mile hurdles: only two flights are jumped in the last seven furlongs.
Fences on both courses are stiff, placing a premium on clean jumping throughout. The different run-in lengths mean the two tracks ride differently in the closing stages: the Old Course’s longer run-in gives gallopers more time to sustain their effort, while the New Course’s shorter finish rewards horses with a turn of foot from the last fence or hurdle. This distinction matters when studying a horse’s previous form at the track.

Key Races at Cheltenham
The Cheltenham Festival is the most prestigious meeting in National Hunt racing. Four days in March, 28 races, and the championship events that define the entire jumps season. The Festival draws the best horses from Britain, Ireland, and occasionally France. It serves the same function for jump racing that Royal Ascot does for the flat — the week when championships are decided and reputations are made. Four Grade 1 championship races anchor the week. The Champion Hurdle (Tuesday, 2 miles) is the two-mile hurdling title. The Queen Mother Champion Chase (Wednesday, 2 miles) tests the fastest chasers over the minimum trip. Thursday features the Stayers’ Hurdle (3 miles) and the Ryanair Chase (2 miles 5 furlongs), covering the staying hurdle and intermediate chase divisions. The Gold Cup (Friday, 3 miles 2½ furlongs) is the race the week builds towards — the staying chase championship and the most coveted prize in jump racing.
The supporting card is equally competitive. The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle opens the Festival on Tuesday — the roar from the stands as the first field sweeps down the hill has become one of the defining sounds of the sport. The Arkle Chase crowns the best novice two-mile chaser. The Triumph Hurdle (Friday) decides the four-year-old championship and regularly throws up future Champion Hurdle contenders. The Champion Bumper (Wednesday) is the top-level NH flat race, often a first glimpse of future champions. The cross-country chase draws a distinct set of specialists. The premier handicaps — the Ultima, Coral Cup, County Hurdle, and Grand Annual — regularly attract fields of 20 or more, making them some of the most competitive and most-bet-on races of the year. These are the races where detailed study of the card matters most, as exposed form horses are thrown in alongside improvers off low weights.
Cheltenham races year-round, not just in March. The November Meeting is a key early-season pointer, headlined by the Gold Cup handicap chase — a race that often identifies horses to follow through the winter. The November fixture also features the Greatwood Hurdle and a series of Grade 2 novice events that serve as the first serious tests for the season’s novice hurdlers and chasers. Trials Day in January features the Cotswold Chase and Cleeve Hurdle, both established Festival trials that give a strong indication of championship form. The International Meeting in December and an April fixture complete a programme running from October to late spring. Even the mid-season cards draw quality fields because trainers value getting their horses experience on the Cheltenham track ahead of the Festival. A horse that has handled the undulations and the hill before March has a genuine edge over one arriving at the Festival with no course form. What to Look for When Betting at Cheltenham
The uphill finish dominates discussion about Cheltenham form, and rightly so — but it tells only part of the story. The climb matters most when the ground is testing. On soft or heavy going, common from November through March, the final three furlongs sap horses that have been galloping on demanding conditions for two miles or more. Stamina and the ability to handle deep ground are essential at this course, particularly over the longer Festival trips. Course experience carries genuine weight at Cheltenham. The undulations, the downhill run to the third-last fence, and the sharp rise to the line create a test not replicated elsewhere in British or Irish racing. Horses that have won here or handled the track well on previous visits tend to outperform first-time visitors with equivalent form at other courses. This is one of the few tracks where prior course form is weighted as heavily as any other factor.
Going conditions vary significantly, even within a single meeting. The Old Course and New Course drain at different rates and can ride differently on the same afternoon. Punters who assume one going report covers both tracks get caught out. The Festival in March can produce anything from good ground after a dry spring to genuinely heavy conditions. Four days of racing takes a toll on the turf, and the ground can cut up significantly by the end of Festival week — worth noting when comparing form from Tuesday’s card with what the surface will ride like by Friday. Race tempo at Cheltenham is shaped by the terrain.
