About Carlisle Racecourse
Carlisle is a right-handed, pear-shaped turf course in the village of Blackwell, about four miles south of the city of Carlisle in Cumbria. The circuit measures one mile and four furlongs with a steep uphill finish of just over three furlongs — a genuine stamina test that sorts out the field long before the winning post. It is a galloping track with easy turns, but the climbs make this one of the stiffest tests in the north of England. The going can get very heavy through winter on this exposed ground.
The course hosts both flat and National Hunt racing, with flat fixtures from May to September and jumps from October through to spring. Around 23 fixtures are staged each year and the course is particularly popular for National Hunt racing, drawing trainers from across the country. Carlisle is one of only two racecourses in Cumbria alongside Cartmel and is owned and operated by The Jockey Club.
Racing records in Carlisle date back to 1559, when Lady Dacre donated a gold bell to be presented to the winner of a horse race — making this one of the oldest racing venues in Britain. The course moved to its current Blackwell site in 1904 from a nearby area known as The Swifts, and the Carlisle Gold Bell is still awarded to the winner of the race that bears its name. Carlisle also made history on 2 July 1929, when the newly formed Totalisator Board operated pool betting on a British racecourse for the first time here — the occasion that launched what became the Tote.

Key Races at Carlisle
The flagship event is the Carlisle Bell, one of the oldest horse races in existence. Lady Dacre's gold bell of 1559 was followed by a second bell inscribed "HBMC" and dated 1599. Both were lost for years before being rediscovered in the Town Clerk's Office in the late 19th century. The race is held at the June meeting over seven furlongs and 173 yards as a handicap for three-year-olds and upwards, and the bell is still presented ceremoniously to the winner — though it is kept in the nearby Carlisle Guildhall Museum. In its long history the Carlisle Bell has only twice been disrupted: it was moved to Thirsk in 2001 and cancelled in 2020.
The Cumberland Plate, first held in 1842, is run alongside the Carlisle Bell at the same June meeting. The Eternal Stakes adds Listed-race quality to the flat programme — a contest over six furlongs and 192 yards restricted to three-year-old fillies.
On the jumps side, two Listed chases headline the November card: the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase and the Houghton Mares' Chase, both over two miles and four furlongs. The Colin Parker has produced notable winners including Many Clouds, who went on to win the Grand National. Red Rum also used Carlisle as a regular starting point for his season, winning the Windermere Handicap Chase here before his Grand National victories. The Graduation Chase provides an early-season test for up-and-coming novice chasers.
Course Characteristics Worth Considering
The steep three-furlong climb to the finish is the defining feature of racing at Carlisle. Horses need to stay the trip and more — plenty of front-runners are caught in the final furlong when the gradient takes its toll. Staying power matters here regardless of the distance, and the emphasis only increases when the ground turns soft.
On the flat, the galloping nature of the track suits horses with a long stride and reserves of stamina. Quick, sharp types that thrive at tighter courses like Chester tend to find Carlisle a very different proposition.
On the jumps course, the fences are considered easy, so the main test is stamina and handling the ground rather than jumping ability. The first fence in the home straight can catch novices coming off a bend and downhill, but experienced chasers rarely have trouble. There is no long straight to mount a challenge from behind, so prominent racers hold an advantage — horses that can bowl along in front and keep finding on the climb tend to do well here.
