How Bath Tips Work on The Tipster League
Every tipster on The Tipster League is ranked by all-time results across all UK and Irish racecourses in our league table. For each race on the Bath card, the tip shown comes from the highest-ranked tipster who has tipped in that race. Tips can update through the morning as more selections come in, but all selections are locked in at 12:00 BST.
What sets The Tipster League apart is that every selection is recorded on each tipster's public profile — wins, losses, and everything in between. The "Top Tipsters at Bath" section on this page breaks that down further, showing how each tipster has performed at this course specifically.
A strong ranking reflects past results, not future outcomes, so always do your own research before placing a bet.
Bath Racecourse
Bath is a flat-only turf course set on Lansdown Hill, about three and a half miles northeast of the city centre in Somerset. At 780 feet above sea level it is Britain's highest flat racecourse — only the National Hunt tracks at Hexham and Exeter sit higher. The track is a left-handed oval of around one mile and four furlongs with a kidney-shaped layout and tight bends throughout. Horses are almost always on the turn, which makes the course a test of balance and agility as much as raw speed.
The home straight climbs steadily for close to four furlongs, putting a premium on stamina in the closing stages. The shortest race distance is five furlongs and 161 yards — there is no straight course, so even sprint races involve navigating the bends. The general character is a galloping track, but the tight turns and uphill finish demand versatility. Comparisons with Epsom are not uncommon — both are undulating left-handed courses where course experience counts for a lot.
The exposed hilltop position and lack of watering mean the going can dry out quickly in summer. Firm or good-to-firm going is the norm from May onwards. Wind is another factor at this altitude and can affect finishing times more than at lowland courses. When sustained rain does arrive the ground can turn soft, but Bath drains reasonably well.
Racing has been held at Bath since 1728, with the track moving to its present site on the Lansdown plateau in 1831. During World War II the course served as a landing strip for the RAF and was known as RAF North Stoke. Bath is also the site of one of racing's most notorious frauds — the 1953 Francasal case, in which a gang substituted a ringer in the Spa Selling Plate and cut the power supply to prevent bookmakers from shortening the odds. The horse won at 10–1 but the weight of money aroused suspicion and Scotland Yard exposed the plot. The facilities were extensively redeveloped in 2016 with a new grandstand and modernised amenities. Around 20 fixtures are staged between April and October.
For fixture dates and visitor information, see the official Bath Racecourse website.
Key Races at Bath
The headline event is the Lansdown Fillies' Stakes, a Listed five-furlong sprint for fillies aged three and upward, run on a Friday in April. It regularly attracts useful sprinters at the start of the flat season and has produced several subsequent Group race winners.
The Beckford Stakes, also Listed, is run over a mile and six furlongs in October and is confined to fillies and mares. It provides one of the better staying tests on the autumn programme and often features lightly raced types looking to prove themselves over a trip.
The Somerset Stakes has been part of the Bath programme since the 1830s and was once regarded as a serious Classic trial. It remains a fixture on the card.
Outside the Listed races, Bath hosts a steady programme of handicaps and maidens through the summer. The course is a popular choice for trainers giving two-year-olds their first racecourse experience, and the smaller fields make it a useful proving ground early in the flat season. The evening meetings in summer draw competitive handicap fields and can offer decent betting opportunities.
What to Look for When Betting at Bath
The draw is worth checking before any bet at this course. The draw bias data on this page, broken down by distance over the last five years, shows how different stall positions have performed. In sprint races the tight left-handed bends can give higher-drawn horses an early positional advantage, though the effect varies with field size and ground conditions. Over a mile and beyond, the draw becomes less significant as runners have time to settle into position.
The uphill finish catches out horses who hit the front too soon. Front-runners need genuine stamina to sustain their effort up the four-furlong climb, and closers with a turn of foot can pick off tiring leaders in the final furlong. Jockeys who know the course well tend to time their runs late — patience up the hill is often rewarded.
Course form counts for more at Bath than at most tracks. The quirky layout, relentless climb, and exposed conditions mean some horses take to it and others never do. A horse with a previous win or placed effort here is worth noting, particularly when the going is similar.
Going conditions deserve particular attention. The altitude and absence of watering mean the ground can change between meetings more sharply than the official going description might suggest. A horse suited by give in the ground may find a surface firmer than expected if there has been a dry spell. Checking conditions close to race time is always sensible at Bath.
The flat statistics on this page show the leading jockeys, trainers, and owners at Bath. Certain local yards and regular riders outperform their overall strike rates here. Our nap of the day picks page shows the single most popular selection across the site, while our horse racing accumulator tips page brings together multi-bet selections — though adding more legs always reduces the probability.
