Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse
Bangor-on-Dee is a jumps-only course on the banks of the River Dee, about five miles southeast of Wrexham off the B5069. The first steeplechase here was on 25 February 1859. It stages around 14 fixtures a year, all on turf, and is the only racecourse in Britain without a grandstand — racing takes place in the open with the Welsh hills as a backdrop.
The track is left-handed and roughly triangular, about a mile and five furlongs round with a run-in of just one and a half furlongs. Nine fences per circuit, including two open ditches and a water jump. Three sharp bends keep the field on the turn throughout and the fences are stiff for a course of this size. The low-lying ground beside the river means the going can turn testing after prolonged rain. Since 2006 the inside of the course has also been used for amateur point-to-point racing run by local hunts.

The headline event is the Anne Duchess of Westminster Memorial Handicap Chase, a staying chase over three miles in November. It honours the late Anne, Duchess of Westminster — owner of Arkle — and the charity day regularly draws competitive fields from yards across Wales and the north of England.
Trainers often use the Easter meeting to give novice hurdlers and chasers their first run on a racecourse. The straightforward layout and smaller fields make Bangor-on-Dee a popular schooling ground for young jumpers. What to Look for When Betting at Bangor-on-Dee
The tight bends and short run-in suit front-runners and horses that jump at speed. There is no long straight to mount a challenge from behind, so prominent racers hold an advantage. Over fences, sloppy jumpers get caught out — nine obstacles per circuit and stiff birch leave little margin for error. Over hurdles, the test is more about handling the turns at pace than the flights themselves.
